City: Sorano (Grosseto) - Pop.
4000 - Alt : 375 m asl -
Location: Tuscany
Description: Picturesque
village in the province of Grosseto, south-western Tuscany (Italy), stretched out on a tufa spur
dominated by the imposing castle "Rocca Orsini".
It's origins are very ancient, probably prehistoric. It was
inhabited by the Etruscans, then was under the domination of
Aldobrandeschi family and made part of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany.
The tufa rock on which Sorano is built is a stone easy to carve and
sculpt rich in ancient tombs and grottos later transformed into wine
cellars and narrow passageways. To visit Sorano is to immerse
oneself in the warm atmosphere embracing the whole history of
humanity. In the course of a simple walk through the area, you
wander from bronze age grottoes, Renaissance palaces, mysterious
streets, and Etruscan necropolises, to dark underground passages of
the imposing fortress, from the medieval village carved in rock to
the leafy uncontaminated woods surrounding the village.
