Description:
Tuscania is a town of just over 8,000 inhabitants, North of Rome not
far from the seacoast. Tuscania, as many towns of this area, stands
on series of tufa rock promontories dominating the Valley of river
Marta (i.e. an important way of communication since prehistoric
times, between Lake Bolsena and the Tyrrhenian Sea near the
Tarquinia). Its origins dates back to the bronze age. Tuscania was a
powerful Etruscan town and later became a Roman town and and
important medieval center. The city has preserved the remains of his
circle of walls, towers and characteristics gates. The Etruscans
made Tuscania prosperous and powerful, fully exploiting the good
geographical position. The earthquake in 1971 damaged its artistic
heritage, which has been restored keeping intact its taste and its
characteristics that make it unique and wonderful.
Sights and Attractions: Church of St. Peter which occupies the ancient
Etruscan acropolis, has 2nd Century facade and three portals
• The Romanesque style Church of Santa Maria Maggiore built
in the eighth century at the foot of the hill S. Peter on a pre-existing pagan
temple • Church of St. Maria del Riposo. Inside is a work in
progress for a national museum exhibit some rare sarcophagi belonged to noble
Etruscan families and rich collection of 15th century paintings • The Duomo
that is located in a characteristic square adorned with a fountain by Vignola. Inside
there is a valuable 15th century marble
tabernacle • Church of St. Marco with some 13th century
frescos • Church of Santa Maria Maggiore with massive tower and
three finely decorated portals •
