Description:
Tarquinia, Etruscan city, was a very prosperous settlement of Lazio.
The ancient city is located on a hill not far from the sea.
Here, remains of an imposing
circle of walls have been discovered, such as the the foundations of a great Etruscan temple known as the "Ara della
Regina", the decoration of which includes a terra-cotta group of winged horses in Hellenistic style, that is considered a
masterpiece of Etruscan art.
 Sights and Attractions:The necropolis of "Monterozzi", on the south
west of the ancient city, contains 6,000 graves cut
in the rock. It is famous for its 200 painted tombs, the earliest of which
date from the 7th century B.C. It constitutes a unique and exceptional
testimony to the ancient Etruscan civilisation
The National Museum, with a huge collection of archeological
finds. It is housed in the Renaissance Palazzo Vitelleschi, which dates back to
1490
Church of Santa Maria di Castello (1121-1208), with a small
bell-tower and three entrances. The interior has a nave and two aisles, divided
by massive pillars with early Christian capitals and friezes. Of note if the
rose-window in the nave and the several marble works.

The Hill of Civita, best known as Pian della Civita or Pian
della Regina, which is seven kilometres away on the Monteromano road.
Impressive ruins of an Etruscan city can be seen there, including the ruins of a
temple dating back to the 4th century B.C.
Museums:
The National Archeological Museum, with a huge collection of
archeological finds. It is housed in the Renaissance Palazzo Vitelleschi, which
dates back to 1439
The Ceramic Museum, located in the splendid Palazzo dei Priori has a hundred
pieces of pottery on display.
