Description:
The small town lies on a tufa spur between two deep valleys whose
origins date back to the Etruscans. In the past the town was rich
and prosperous thanks to its strategic location along the Cassia
road. The defensive walls are still well preserved. The look of
Sutri is suggestive because very rich in medieval houses, small
piazzas, narrow streets, alleys and even two Roman gates.
Sights and Attractions: The Romanesque style Cathedral has rectangular
plan with 3 rows of columns. The interior preserves an altarpiece in Byzantine
style.
• Next to the Cathedral is the fortified Palazzo
Vescovile.
• The "Arco Romano" overlooks the Piazza del Comune, in whose
center is a baroque fountain with basin adorned by dolphins.
• The Palazzo Comunale preserves Roman and Medieval remains.
• Church of San Silvestro • Church of San Francesco with frescos by
Sodoma and other paintings. • Villa Savorelli houses the Church of Santa Maria
del Monte and the monumental necropolis dating back to the 6th and 4th centuries
b.c., including a grandiose amphitheater fully excavated in the tufa stone. • In
the same block of tufa is the Church of Madonna del Parto (very suggestive) still preserving very
ancient frescos.
