Description:
Marta is a tourist resort located on the southern shore of Lake
Bolsena, 80 km Northwest of Rome and 24 km from Viterbo. The medieval town lies on a hill,
dominating the lake. The houses in the city are built in tufa stone,
with alleys, stairs, walkways, small piazzas and charming corners
overlooked by the imposing octagonal clock tower and by the fortress
that Pope Urban IV built around 1260.
Sights and Attractions: Worthy of note is the Martana Island still
preserving a medieval church and a castle where in 534 a.c. where imprisoned
Amalasunta the daughter of the Gothic King Teodorico

Events: May 14, the "Barabbata" or Feast of
Madonna del Ponte that celebrates the fertility of the earth: men, divided into
categories, (citizens, peasants and fishermen), go in procession to
the small shrine of Madonna del Monte. On the spot they offer a
refreshments to everybody

• 28 and 29th July feast to honor Santa Marta, the city
patron Saint, with procession and lakefront fireworks.
