City:
Bomarzo - Pop. 1600 - Alt 263 m a.s.l. - Location: Lazio
Description:
Bomarzo is a very small town in the province of Viterbo (Lazio,
central Italy). It emerges on a hill in the lower valley of the
river Tiber. It is located at some 18 kilometers from Viterbo and 68
from Rome. It belonged to the Orsini family, whose castle is at the
edge of the densely-built town.
Sights
and Attractions: The main attraction of Bomarzo
is a garden called the Bosco Sacro (Sacred wood) or, locally best
known as Parco dei Mostri ("Monsters' Park"), because of many
sculptures and stone works, some sculpted in the bedrock such as
elephants and demons with gaping mouths taller than a man, giant
stone turtles and mythological figures, sphinxes and darkly monitory
inscriptions. It is a sight unique in Italy and maybe the world.
Museums:
Outside Bomarzo, on the slopes of the hill, is the Parco dei Mostri
("Park of Monsters") - Inside the Park there is a bookshop, bar,
restaurant, picnic area and parking area. • The Etruscan Necropolis
of Montecasoli is 3 km away.
Events: Palio horse race and parade in historical
