The province is an enchanting area with age-old mystique. The sense of the past
and present living together is plain to see in all tourist spots that have
immense historical/cultural appeal. A stroll around the Vesuvius site will bring
you to the huge archeological digs of Pompei and Ercolano, the "risen cities".
Both cities were destroyed by the Volcano in 79 ac and are now UNESCO World

giving the visitor an insight into the past and the chance of seeing how the
Romans lived from day to day. Some excellent architectural and environmental
finds has also been uncovered from Vesuvian villas at works that were started in
the 16th century, the best known being at the Villa Campolieto at Ercolano.
The nearby islands:

renowned islands of Capri, Ischia and Procida. Although you really need days to
explore them, even in the space of just a few hours, visitors can see an

Emperor Tiberius' villa, the celebrated little piazza, the white houses of
Anacapri, the unique color of the Grotta Azzurra and the three massive cliffs
are but a few of the many pleasures to be discovered on the lovely islands
sitting off Naples. Ischia too us spell-binding, the green island, a center of
well-being and capital of the hot springs tourist industry. A tour of the island
will show you not just all the villages and towns but also the superb landscapes
dominated by a lush green backdrop. A particularly beautiful way to start a day
is to get up before just down while the streetlights are still on. Seeing the
lights twinkling on the islands and around the bay of Naples soon followed by
the sunrise is something you'll never forget: For a weekend of sea and nature,
perhaps by boat, Procida offers the best sailing of all the islands in the Bay.
